CAM-PLEX RV Park - Gillette, WY

Sunday, August 28, 2011

Today is the first day of the Escapade opening at 3 P.M. our Elk BoF has a table in the main hall to register Escapees wanting to become members of the Elks and collecting can pull tabs for Ronald MacDonald House.

I also went to the other tables for the Chili Chapter and The Ranch. There is a vender’s area and classroom for group gatherings and seminar presentations. After dinner there was a door prize (you have to be there to win the prize) presentations and a singer comedian entertainer, that was very good and material relevant to our life style. And Mr. Cannon was safely parked in Silver Sally.

This evening we attended the entertainment program door prizes and the entertainer was a comedian-musician, guitar player very good.

CAM-PLEX RV Park - Gillette, WY

Saturday, August 27, 2011
Piedmont, South Dakota - Elk Creek RV Park 66 degrees mostly sunny. Buster was packed up and on the road to Escapade, Gillette, Wyoming. Buster drives on into Gillette for a drink of diesel fuel, the first since Fargo, ND seven hundred miles ago. George pumped seventy-nine gallons into Buster. That is an average of 8.84 mpg not bad for the big boy.

Driving west on I 90 in Wyoming

We changed Buster’s states map today adding Wyoming coming to twenty-nine states now. I am late with this as there is no plan for Friday when we leave Gillette, WY. We are going to plan west to Yellowstone National Park, then when where unknown and to The Ranch, in Lakewood, NM
Buster parked at
CAM-PLEX RV Parks - Gillette, WY 99 degrees and mostly sunny, and we are checked in and parked in the Boxelder camping area with 50 amp electric water and dump connection. We made connection with many escapee friends, from The Ranch, Elks BoF and others.

1880's Shower Tower
We have our own Private shower facility here in this camp site area that has gone unused. Two members are in the area and stopped in this morning. Wind from the north yesterday was really strong and backed down today and switched direction coming from the south and southeast.

New (this year) Escapees members arrived today camping with us, they are not Elks Lodge members yet, but they are interested in joining the Elks. We took them along as our guests to Rapid City Elks Lodge # 1187 this evening after happy hour we all (14) went to the Rapid City Elks lodge for dinner.

Escapees Elk BoF Camp
In the afternoon we had a good wind blowing from the north. I had put up the canopy and had a stake in the ground at each led of the canopy and the tiedowns also staked down at each corner. In between each north leg of the canopy I could feel the wind pushing against the X bracing between the legs. Latter I put a tie-down from a table to the center of the X brace A total of six rigs are here for the Escapees Elks C-BoF rally.

Vera and John
Yes it is low attendance and next week during the Escapees Escapade the Elks C-BoF will have our business meeting with a much larger representation of the membership in attendance expected.

Two other Riggs for the rally came in today.

Silver Sally took us into Rapid City, SD to purchase some supplies, about a sixteen mile trip.

Silver Sally had us over to Rogers and Barbra’s rig early 8:30 A.M. for a driving tour of the black hills of South Dakota. Roger drove about a hundred and fifty-mile loop thru the major towns of the Black Hills. In Lead, SD there is the closed (2001) open pit Homestake Mine, mining gold and silver (no picture).
Hill City to Keystone Train

Deer, there were five as we pulled up
In Hill City, SD we saw one end of a railroad line that runs to Keystone, SD that was used for the mining operations from the 1880's and on and in 1957 tourist operations started. This line was also used in movie and television productions.

Crazy Horse Memorial

We saw where they are blasting into the rock for a sculpture of Chief Crazy Horse and his horse into the rock mountain face (Crazy Horse Memorial).
There is a Prairie Dog
The lone Buffalo
In front of the face will be his out stretched arm pointing and the horses head. There was some wildlife also, Buffalo, Prairie Dog and Elk. Latter we found the rest of the heard of Buffalo. These were in from of a camping area, the road and with some standing in water at the left edge of the picture.
Buffalo heard
Then on to Keystone where we had lunch and Mount Rushmore National Memorial, what a view and a scenic drive. We drove thru Rapid City and back to Sturgis.

Sturgis, South Dakota - Sturgis RV Park

Friday, August 19, 2011
Herreid, South Dakota - Camp 83, 52 degrees mostly sunny. What a day, we planned a long drive for us (of 266 miles) and another forty miles for a detour, WOW. One saving thing was time change to Mountain Daylight Time zone, gaining an hour of daylight. We departed just after ten A.M. from Camp 83 headed south for sixty miles then a right turn. Wrong, a detour there is water on the road ahead. Detour east twenty miles, now travel south the rest of thirty miles and detour west twenty miles and travel south thirty miles, one hundred miles to go south sixty miles. Going west on US 212 crossing the Missouri River and into Mountain Daylight Time zone, yea. Going down SR 79 you could see the black hills of South Dakota getting bigger and closer a very nice scenic drive today. In the picture below you can see the heavy weather we did stay away from. Buster did drive thru some rain along US 212 be the drive sixty miles south kept us out of the heavy stuff.
Buster parked at Camp 83
Crossing the Missouri River on US 212

Sturgis, South Dakota - Sturgis RV Park, 73 degrees partly sunny. Bonnie found that Roger and Beverly from The Ranch in Lakewood, NM are in Sturgis also and called them to say hello. Buster is parked only a mile and a half from them, thus we got together for the evening. Roger drove the four of us to the Silverado Casino in Deadwood, SD for dinner then a scenic drive around to Spearfish, SD. When we arrived back at their rig I noticed that a bus parked across the road was Bill and Janet who installed the Dish TV antenna on Buster.

Herreid, South Dakota - Camp 83

Thursday, August 18, 2011
Jamestown, North Dakota - Frontier Fort Campground, 61 degrees mostly sunny.

We left around eleven thirty headed west on interstate ninety four for over an hour. 0ne area we passed thru, Crystal Springs, ND was emergency construction for water on the side of the road. Never thought of pictures here but did get pictures latter. In one area the westbound lanes were under water with all traffic using the eastbound lanes. (About sixty miles east of Bismark) The construction was raising the grade of the westbound lanes and diking all the travel area in the lake area. The map shows a lake about a half mile north of the road (I 94) and today the lake was on the south side also. There was bad flooding in Minot, ND this spring I herd this week the level is now down to just at flood stage.

US 83 southbound
Herreid, South Dakota (population 482) - Camp 83 Campground, 91 degrees partly cloudy and windy with a front moving thru the area. Going south on US 83 there were more lakes and ponds flooding close to the road. The picture is of the water encroaching on the road.

There is nothing in this town except a campground for travelers. This town is really camping. Between four thirty and six thirty the front moved thru with wind and rain, just enough to make things wet.

Jamestown, North Dakota - Frontier Fort

Wednesday, August 17, 2011
Jamestown, North Dakota - Frontier Fort, 55 degrees mostly sunny to 83 degrees and mostly sunny.

We took it easy today with Silver Sally driving us around Jamestown for a look around town. Tomorrow Buster moves onto South Dakota with a planned one hundred fifty mile trip.

In today’s picture of Buster you can see that the site here at Frontier Fort is not level as I used pads under the front jacks and extended them to the maximum. I could have parked further back in the site but the satellite dish would have not had a clear view of the southwest sky.

Tuesday, August 16, 2011
Crookston, Minnesota - Central Park Campground, 66 degrees and partly sunny.

Jamestown, North Dakota - Frontier Fort, 78 degrees mostly sunny. Buster got going after eleven this morning and needed to go dump black and gray water tanks. There is a gas station on the southwest side of town that has the dump. (To enlarge pictures; Click on picture to enlarge, click return button (<) on your browser to return to post).
I 94 going west
Ten minutes and Buster is going again to North Dakota and south for Busters fuel. Buster refueled in Fargo, ND 564 miles since Black river Falls, WI. Diesel price $ 3.879 per gallon, Buster’s average 8.78 mpg on the last fulling. Then heading west on interstate ninety four to Jamestown, ND for the night, 187 miles traveled today. Since leaving North Carolina on August 1, nineteen hundred miles traveled with Buster to North Dakota.

Crookston, Minnesota - Central Park Campground

Friday, August 12, 2011
Detroit Lakes, Minnesota - Country Campground 64 degrees mostly cloudy. Buster drives further north and west today. Driving north into a light rain for a while to clearing.

Buster at Country Campground
Crookston, Minnesota - Central Park Campground 77 degrees and partly cloudy today. After getting Buster parked in central park (30 amp electric, is the only connection) Silver Sally took us over to Grand Forks, North Dakota about thirty miles further west from Crookston. We did not visit Grand Forks, last year and Bonnie wanted to see the change from years past.
The drive back to Crookston was a rainy one.
US 59 in Minnesota
Busters trip was 96 miles from Detroit Lakes to Crookston, Minnesota on US 59 and US 2 (a four-lane-divided highway) both in good repair. No Florida or North Carolina licence plates seen today. We did see enough Manitoba, Canada plate to almost think we are in Canada when we were in Grand Forks. It is only seventy five miles to the Canadian boarder.

Thursday, August 11, 2011
Apple Valley MN - Lebanon Hills Campground 55 degrees mostly sunny.

Buster at Lebanon Hills Campground
US 10 in Minnesota
We are on route to be in Crookston, Minnesota on Friday for visits with Bonnies extended family for five days then pushing on for South Dakota and a Escapees Elks Birds of a Feather (BoF) rally in Piedmont South Dakota August 23, -26. That rally is a per rally to the Escapees Escapade rally August 28, - September 2, that is in Gillette, Wyoming

Buster took us 228 miles north and west across Minnesota on US highways , we left the interstate highways behind at Monticello Minnesota getting over to US 10. Earlier today I remembered that I used the last water filter cartridge in July and I had not purchased any more. So there was a Home Depot one exit before the exit Buster was going to take anyway. I purchased two packages, Bonnie and I were going around the store in different circles each picked up one package. I felt better having the second package available in Buster. Interstate 94 in Minnesots was the roughest road in our travels this year and were glad to exit that road. Today to: Detroit Lakes, Minnesota - Country Campground
84 degrees and partly cloudy today.

In Little Falls, MN we crossed west of the Mississippi River on our trip west. And since we left North Carolina we have noticed at least one car a day with North Carolina licence plate, except today. But we did maintain the record of another Florida licence plate seen every day.

Black River Falls, Wisconsin - Parkland Village Campground

Wednesday, August 10, 2011
Black River Falls, Wisconsin - Parkland Village Campground, 46 degrees now that is what I am talking about and mostly sunny this morning. On the right side of the Blog I edited the map for Buster’s states visited adding Wisconsin and editing the wording. Our travels this year had added nothing new to the map, thus there was nothing to change for 2011 until we reached Wisconsin. Have you noticed there is sin in Wisconsin?
Buster parked at Parkland Village Campground
Apple Valley, Minnesota - Lebanon Hills Campground 76 degrees mostly sunny.
Buster arrived here just after one in the afternoon and while setting up there was no power to Buster’s satellite antenna box. There are many wires and plugs in that small compartment and I thought I touched on a plug type power supply that connected to the antenna and when I touched the power button on the box there was a power on light flash, but not again anytime I touched the button. When I started to remove that power supply, I realized that power supply was not the correct one, now I trace the wires and find the correct power supply and it is an in between wire power supply and the plug had dropped out of the power input side of the power supply, reinserting that everything works correctly.

Silver Sally was cleaned up, we got cleaned up and went to "MOA" Mall of America. Latter we went to Walmart and the one we picked has a large sowing section, Bonnie had fun checking material there. Back at the campground Buster was cleaned up.

Black River Falls, Wisconsin - Parkland Village Campground

Tuesday, August 9, 2011
Jefferson, Wisconsin - Bark River Campground 63 degrees partly foggy, to cloudy morning. Buster goes to work again today as we travel northwest towards the twin cities of Minnesota.
Buster at Bark River Campground
Tonight we stopped in Black River Falls, Wisconsin - Parkland Village Campground 73 degrees and partly sunny, what a loverly afternoon. We got on the road at shortly after nine as Busters holding tanks needed dumping, the campsite we had was water and electric (50 amp) only. The day planned was dump holding tanks, drive the interstates, get Buster a drink of diesel fuel and drive again then stop in Fairchild, Wisconsin.
Interstate 90 entering another construction area
That second drive did not happen, after fueling there was a casino, campground and Walmart all in one place (within two miles driving for Silver Sally) who could resist not stopping here for the night as we had one hundred sixty seven miles covered for the day, we are done for the day even tho it is early afternoon.

We had dinner at the casino and picked up a few things at Walmart. There were numerous construction areas on the interstate highways and also on Wisconsin state roads and there is a shorter "construction season" here in Wisconsin.

Jefferson, Wisconsin - Bark River Campground

Sunday, August 7, 2011
Rockford, Illinois - Blackhawk Valley Campground 72 degrees cloudy rain shower.
Scott and Kim
Kim and Scott came to Buster and took us out to breakfast at White Pine State Park buffet. White Pine State Park is southwest of Black Hawk Valley Campground about 35 miles. Great food and great family time together. We are so glad to have the time with Scott and Kim as they are moving next week to Florida.
George and Bonnie
Buster worked only a short seventy seven miles today and he stopped for a drink of diesel fuel. In the above picture notice the spelling of teepee.

Jefferson, Wisconsin - Bark River Campground 84 degrees partly sunny. We are in a park that is mostly seasonal campers. While Art and Sherry are in a park that is only seasonal campers. After getting Buster parked and setup Silver Sally drove us to Art and Sherry’ campground. We know Art and Sherry from our Lakewood, NM campground "The Ranch". After visiting a while we went to Sullivan, Wisconsin for Broasted Chicken dinner. After dinner Mexican Train that the boys won.

Sunday, August 7, 2011

Saturday, August 6, 2011
Carlock, Illinois - Kamp Komfort RV Park 72 degrees cloudy. A short drive today compared to yesterdays 248 miles today’s 128 miles was be easy.

Rockford, Illinois - Blackhawk Valley Campground 88 degrees partly sunny. The overcast went away as the day went on.
Bonnie touching up Silver Sally
Took a ride to find a carwash for Silver Sally then to Walmart to get a birthday card for a Ranch hand in our Lakewood, NM park turning ninety next month. Bonnie also put some touch up on the tough spots.
Buster Brown & Silver Sally
Talked on the telephone with our niece Kim and we are having breakfast in the morning as Kim and Scott had plans for today. Then on to Jefferson, Wisconsin, we will see Art and Sherry our Mexican Train players from The Ranch in Lakewood, NM. We play Mexican Train there most evenings when there at The Ranch. Nine hundred fifty miles traveled this week from Moncure, NC to Rockford, Illinois.

Saturday, August 6, 2011

Carlock, Illinois - Kamp Komfort RV Park

August 5, 2011

Straughn, Indiana - New Lisbon Family Campground, 68 degrees mostly sunny. Boy did that change after starting down the road today the weather changed to cloudy overcast, decent driving no rain or glare from the sun. stopped in Indianapolis for fuel what a mistake, there was construction at the exit and the signal allowed only one or two vehicles at a time from the ramp. Thought the price per gallon was good until reaching the pump then reality sets in when it is thirty cents more than expected.
I 70 Indiana
Carlock, Illinois - Kamp Komfort RV Park 88 degrees partly cloudy. A lot of traffic on interstate seventy and seventy four. A large portion of I 465 in Indianapolis is under construction, slow and congested driving with MY exit closed and detoured the the next exit and make a U turn to enter I 74 westbound.
George's Gray shirt
Today I wearing a gray shirt just picked thru a pile of shirts and gray felt good, gray day today. Latter at the campground we are getting ready to make a run to "Wally" and a bite to eat Bonnie puts on a "gray shirt". I have disconnected the tow bar from Solver Sally. Cannot remember why I went back to Buster for but Bonnie was putting on her shoes as I was leaving, so she she should be back to Silver Sally soon? I start the car and wait for Bonnie, finally mover the car around to the front of buster, the door opens slowly with Bonnie slowly coming out. Bonnie is on the telephone moving slowly to the car gets in and we start going while Bonnie continues on the telephone. Overhearing a while I now can tell it is Christine, telling what is happening there in North Carolna.
Bonnie's Gray shirt
Bonnie’s shirt is Ariana’s Bombs softball team, coincidence? Latter after eating in the restaurant washing my hands there is a mirror in front of me and there on my shirt above the pocket is a logo, I look close it said "Wilbur Smith" that is who Christine works for. So shortly after we both are wearing gray shirts that Christine got us she calls Bonnie’s telephone.
